- Became the royal residence and chief city of Assyria under Sennacherib (2 Kings 19:36).
- Nahum predicted the city's destruction (Nahum 3:1-7).
- Jonah told to go here (Jonah 1:2).
- Nineveh's fall to the Medes and Babylonians in 612 BC marked the breakup of the over-expanded Assyrian empire.
