Jacob 1
Jacob 1:12-13, 17-19
The Nephites were destroyed because of their pride. Moroni has seen our day and says that we walk in our pride. This is the first instance of the prophet speaking about the main problem that destroys both.
The problem:
"Many of you have begun to search for gold, and for silver, and for all manner of precious ores"
"in .. this land, which is a land of promise"
"the hand of providence hath smiled upon you .. that you have obtained many riches"
"because some of you have obtained more abundantly than that of your brethren"
"ye are lifted up in the pride of your hearts"
"and wear stiff necks and high heads"
"because of the costliness of your apparel"
"ye suppose that ye are better than [your brethren]"
The solution:
"think of your brethren like unto yourselves"
"be familiar with all and free with your substance"
"that they may be rich like unto you"
If you do seek riches, "ye will seek them for the intent to do good"
"to clothe the naked"
"to feed the hungry"
"to liberate the captive"
"administer relief"
"to the sick and the afflicted"
