 Rehoboam inherited the united kingdom of Israel under his father [[Solomon]].  It was during his reign that the nation initially split between [[two kingdoms]], and he became the first king over the kingdom of Judah (see 1 Kings 12), leading the tribes of [[Judah]] and [[Benjamin]] (1 Kings 12:21).  The kingdom of Israel (ten tribes) named [[Jeroboam]] as their first king (1 Kings 12:19-20).
